Vancouver Dyke March 2024

The Vancouver Dyke March and Festival focuses on the experiences of individuals whose gender identity or expression intersects with their sexual orientation, further marginalizing them within the broader 2SLGBTQIA+ community. This includes trans and cisgender women and femmes, butches, as well as other trans, genderqueer, gender non-conforming, and non-binary individuals.

The term “dyke” is used to reclaim a word that was once a slur, similar to how "queer" has been reclaimed. It is seen as an organizing principle of protest and celebration, not as shorthand for a specific identity. It is acknowledged that not all participants identify as dykes and may prefer terms such as lesbian, queer, Two-Spirit, bisexual, pansexual, asexual, aromantic, or other terms.

The event is inclusive of all families and relationships, especially those that challenge heterocentric norms. This includes singles, non-monogamous, non-normative, multi-parent, and multi-generational families, childless families, chosen families, and families of all other shapes and sizes.

The Vancouver Dyke March and Festival aims to create space and visibility for individuals marginalized on the basis of race, ethnicity, religion, abilities, class, immigration status, or age, and who may not always feel represented by the larger Pride movement.

Supporters are welcomed to stand in solidarity with these communities by financially contributing to the Vancouver Dyke March, attending the March and Festival while keeping the focus where it belongs, and by being open to listening, learning, and growing.

Police at the March: The Vancouver Dyke March does not invite police to participate in our March or utilize them for the security of our March. However, the City of Vancouver will be sending uniformed officers to ensure traffic safety while we march. We respect that this may be a barrier for participants and want to be transparent about the anticipated police presence so everyone can make an informed decision about whether they want to march with us.
