You've always wanted to play in a country dyke band
Have you always wanted to play in a dyke band? Bushy Park is looking for some dyke or queer woman-identifying musicians who want to play bluegrass and country music.
Bushy Park is a dyke country band that does gender-flips on country classics and originals in a feel good, friendly style. They are a working band that plays gigs festivals, dances, weddings.
Sophia Kelly is the band leader and we asked her for more information:
We are looking to start up rehearsals shortly and need some new gals – guitar, banjo, drums, mandolin and/or bass would be great.
We love making music with dykes. We love taking this amazing working-class story musical tradition and adding a queer bend to it. Bushy Park has been lucky enough to rehearse outdoors all last spring and summer, and in a highly ventilated distanced, masked space during the fall up until the December restrictions. We had an amazing socially distanced Pride pop up concert in the park in 2020, and another early fall pop-up concert in a park.
We are all one shot vaccinated, and have already been booked for outdoor gigs beginning in late August, and we are looking for some dyke or queer woman-identifying musicicns to join us. Rehearsals will be outdoors, under a rain shelter as required, or in our indoor ventilated space if everyone agrees.
In Bushy Park we believe, like Dolly Parton in being kind, having fun and building community across the divides. We believe in the power of country music to help all people have fun, sing along and feel good together. Like Dolly, we want to wear what we want, sing what makes us feel good, tell stories about what matters to us, and build community through country music.
Bushy Park are mostly cis, queer/lesbian women settlers, living in and around Vancouver Canada.
As Dolly says – “You gotta keep trying to find your niche and trying to fit into whatever slot that’s left for you or to make one of your own.” This is ours.
