This sassy book is your VIP pass, taking you behind the scenes with a TikTok superstar who shatters stereotypes and proves that math can be fascinating and fun, even for people who think they aren't good at it. With her irreverent style and unique perspective, Kyne investigates mathematical mysteries while educating us about the art of drag. She explores surprising connections, such as the elegance of ballroom culture and the nature of infinity, the rebellious joys of Pride and dividing by zero, and the role of statistics in her own experience on Drag Race. Kyne gets personal while sharing her experiences as a queer person forging a path in STEM, overcoming obstacles to stay fierce, stay real, and thrive! She empowers readers of all skill levels to break school rules, question everything, and embrace math's beauty.
Guest Host Candie Tanaka is a multiracial trans writer, artist and librarian challenging the binaries continually reconstructed between self and other while exploring archive and memory in a socio-political context. They are a creative writing graduate of The Writer’s Studio program at Simon Fraser University and have a BFA in Intermedia from Emily Carr Institute of Art + Design. Their first YA book, Baby Drag Queen, was published with Orca Books in April 2023. They’ve also published work in Resonance: Essays on the Craft of Life and Writing with Anvil Press and This Will Only Take A Minute: Canadian Flash Fiction with Guernica Editions. They are also the Executive Director of the Storytelling with Drag Queens Foundation, a non-profit organization with a mandate to promote diversity and inclusion in literacy. The Foundation prioritizes IBPOC and LGBTQ2S+ performers and allies to read stories, participate in sing-a-longs and perform for libraries, schools and other community organizations.
This special event is held in a separate venue, the landmark Rio Theatre, and advance tickets are required. All audience members must be over age 19.
