Vancouver Pride 2021 Classroom Series

#CHOOSEYOURPRIDE

Pride is a time to learn + grow! As part of this year's Pride programming, we are engaging facilitators and experts to deliver five workshops discussing different topics throughout the month of July.

Due to the nature of the workshops and in order to encourage participation and active dialogue, each session has a maximum attendee number of 100 people.

Register at vancouverpride.ca/tickets starting early summer.

Out in Schools Presents: YOU on Screen
Monday, July 19 @6PM PST
Facilitated by: Out in Schools
A one-hour workshop on queer representation in film and media. Out In Schools will lead a quick check-in followed by a discussion on why representation of queer stories is important. Next, we’ll watch and debrief the short film Biidaaban (The Dawn Comes) by Amanda Strong. Finally, we’ll wrap up by talking about opportunities for participants to engage further and share their stories.

Becoming Accomplices for Racial Justice: Moving Beyond Anti-Racism Fundamentals
Wednesday, July 21 @6PM PST
Facilitated by: Amal Rana, Cambium Arts & Consulting
Have you taken introductory workshops on anti-racism fundamentals? Looking to take the next step and deepening your knowledge? Join us for this interactive session. Together, we’ll examine the ways in which white supremacy culture is imbued in many of our community and work spaces. We’ll explore ways to dismantle structures of power and build braver pathways towards becoming active accomplices for racial justice.

Please note:

Everyone is welcome and please keep in mind this session is designed specifically for white people delving deeper into how they can be accomplices to racial justice. It’s for those who have taken introductory level sessions on the topic.

Educating ourselves regarding racism in its many forms is an ongoing journey without an arrival point. This 1 hour session is one small step in a lifetime of work towards becoming accomplices in the fight against racism.

GS101: Introduction to Gender, Sexuality, and Allyship
Saturday, July 24 @ 10AM PST
Facilitated by: Eliot Newton
This introductory-level workshop provides factually accurate and age-appropriate information related to identity and human experience, with an emphasis on respect for others and being open to differences in our community. It focuses on the role of colonialism in our discussions of gender and identity, introduces the nuance of both identity and expression, and introduces the split attraction model. The workshop then shifts to a discussion with participants on how to support people in our communities who may have diverse sexual or gender identities, before wrapping up with some best practices on allyship at the individual and community level.

Queer and Trans History B.C.
Wednesday, July 28 @6PM PST
Facilitated by: Heather McCain
This workshop will take participants through some of B.C.’s milestone moments in 2SLGBTQIA+ history. We will journey from the 1950s, a time when homosexuality was a crime, to current day. Learn about the people and organizations that fought for, and secured, the rights, freedoms, and protections we currently hold.
The workshop will cover the many firsts in British Columbia, including the first gay rights protest, first dyke march, and the first Pride house in the Olympic Games. Please join us to learn more about queer and trans history in B.C.
