Are you looking for a new online platform that caters exclusively to women who love women? Look no further than The Sapphic Library.

Founded by a group of friends over beer, the website was created with the goal of providing a safe, sophisticated, and intelligent space for women. In a recent interview, the founders Stephanie, Sky and Marie shared their motivations for creating the platform, the challenges they faced in the early days, and their plans for the future of The Sapphic Library. Join us as we explore the story behind this innovative website.

The idea to create a new women loving women dating website came to the group of friends over beer one evening at the PNE.

“We originally wanted to call it The Library, but that domain was taken,” Stephanie recalled in a recent interview. “So we settled for The Sapphic Library.”

Sapphic, Marie explained, means: relating to sexual attraction or activity between women as in,  "the two women share a sapphic kiss in the play"

Why create a Lez dating website?

Stephanie, Sky and Marie have all been or currently are on lesbian dating websites and they absolutely hate them. Mostly because there are always men on the sites/apps.

“Honestly, what is that even about!?” exclaims Stephanie. “Catfishing … OMG this is an epidemic on these websites/apps!!”

The group wanted to create a safe women loving women dating website on which they can vet every sign up and investigate every reported profile.

“We cannot guarantee no men or catfishers ever,“ Stephanie adds, “but we do our very best to weed them out.”

The project

Marie’s husband John helped get the website going, and is teaching Steph and Sky the skills needed to create pages, edit code, add/remove content. There were many hiccups in the early days as the team ran into a lot of homophobia while looking for web developers. In the end, John built the foundations himself.

Into the Future

Currently the team is working on getting an app into the Apple and Google stores. This will be a huge step forward for the Library. Eventually there are plans to monetize the site in some way through subscriptions and premium features.

For now, the biggest challenge is promoting the site, getting the word out, and building up membership.
