Surrey, BC—IN BRIEF: I am Woman! Hear Me Laff! Is back! Join Surrey Civic Theatres for a laugh riot to celebrate International Women’s Day with a lineup of some of Canada’s funniest comics.

FEBRUARY 2021— Looking for an evening of belly laughs? Get your hilarity fix with one of the best nights of comedy the Lower Mainland has to offer! The annual event I Am Woman! Hear Me Laff! is back for International Women’s Day featuring some of Canada’s funniest comedians who are masters of their craft.
This all-female line up is stacked with premium joke slingers. Headlined by the hilarious Elvira Kurt, this laughter fest also includes local comics Katie-Ellen Humphries, Yumi Nagashima and Soo Jeong.
Elvira Kurt is flying in from Toronto to be a part of the show, something which she is delighted about. She said, “I’m ready, excited, and happy to own being headliner for I Am Woman! Hear Me Laff! for a bunch of reasons. Performing shows around
International Women’s Day are always special, but particularly now, with the strange times we’ve been living in. It’s an extra special thrill to be able to perform a show live and in person.”
Kurt, who has been in the comedy profession for over thirty years, says comedy was always a salvation for her growing up. She says as a child she gravitated towards funny women that she saw on the television and then set her sights on being like that. It definitely wasn’t a career her Hungarian-immigrant parents were keen on, as they were followed her dream. “I had my heart set on pursuing this passion. I felt compelled to pursue comedy. And it’s so wrapped up in my identity now I don’t know who I would be if I didn’t do stand-up comedy.”
Kurt said in the show, audiences can expect to hear her cover a lot of ground in her act. “There’s going to be a lot of taking the temperature of the times. I feel like I’m someone who has a unique perspective due to my longevity in this field, so there will be some looking back as well as looking forward, I’ll tackle all the gear shifts we’ve done as a society. There will be comedy about style, fashion, family, politics, climate change, food…it will all be in there as I’ve been through everything. I’ve been single, I’ve been in relationships, I’ve had break ups, I’ve got kids now, so I’ve had babies, who are now teenagers, they’ll be some pandemic stuff in there…I’ve been through all those before and afters, the same as everybody else and so you’re going to get my thoughts about it!”
Kurt says her comedy has a broad appeal and that the show is for anyone who is looking for a chance to enjoy themselves. “Tired of the same old faces you’ve been hunkered down with for the last two years? Let’s put on some hard pants, leave our homes, and sit in some unfamiliar chairs and be together. But if you’re not ready for that, come in your soft pants. Come and have a good laugh. We deserve it.”
She said she is looking forward to travelling to BC to soak up some of the West Coast vibe and that she is especially excited to be performing in Surrey. She said, “I’ve been to Surrey a few times and what I love is the willingness of the audience. There is a real enthusiasm on their part to go along for the ride. And the shows that I performed in Surrey in the past are so memorable to me. It’s one of the reasons why when I was invited to perform, I jumped.”
Kurt says that she is more grateful than ever to perform in front of a crowd, as during the pandemic people have gotten used to staying home and being entertained there, so she really appreciates the effort people make to leave the house. She said, “If I could consensually ask for a group hug, I would, because it means so very much to just be with people again. There’s no replacement for it. No amount of likes or hearts can fill the void of being in an audience’s presence. We create something very special together and it is such a unique experience—for the audience and me. Together we make something that will never happen again. It’s a gift we give to each other. It’s magic. It’s alchemy and I love it.”
