What if - A Short Film on Language & Queerness with Frank Theatre

Director & Curator: Fay Nass

a frank theatre company production

In development with MOSAIC and Love Intersections

Online July 2022

What If gathers thirteen community participants with English as an Additional Language to take part in a short-film creation process, curated by Fay Nass and led by Jen Sungshine and her company Love Intersections. The process will investigate how language shapes identity, gender and sexuality, culminating in a short, narrative documentary.

Background

What If is part of a larger community creation, Mother Tongues, produced by the frank theatre in collaboration with participants, MOSAIC, and Love Intersections. Mother Tongues works with LGBTQ+ artists and community members, addressing their experiences as people with English as an Additional Language (EAL). Mother Tongues investigates how language shapes identity, gender and sexuality, exploring notions of queerness outside of English-speaking contexts.

The vision for this project is to celebrate the diversity of languages that one speaks, and to create space for stories that exist outside of academic and Anglophone notions of queerness.

Mother Tongues will look at the beauty and the injury of speaking an additional language and will address the limitations and the liberations that come with existing between two languages.
